Questions and answers

OMDs are improper resting postures and functions of the tongue, lips, and jaw. These seemingly small habits can have a ripple effect throughout the body. Common OMDs include: • Tongue Thrust: When the tongue pushes forward against or between the teeth during swallowing, speaking, or at rest. • Mouth Breathing: Chronic breathing through the mouth instead of the nose. • Improper Tongue Posture: The tongue resting low and forward in the mouth instead of against the roof of the mouth (the "spot"). • Thumb Sucking/Pacifier Use: Prolonged habits beyond early childhood. • Lip Incompetence: Difficulty keeping lips together at rest. • Lip Trap: Upper incisors "catch" the lower lip; giving a "Bugs Bunny" appearance.
