When Should My Child See a Dentist?

Wondering when to take your child to the dentist for the first time? You're not alone. Many parents aren't sure when to start or why early dental visits matter. The truth is, a healthy smile starts earlier than you might think!

Your child should visit a children's dentist by their first birthday or within 6 months of their first tooth coming through. These early visits are about much more than just checking for cavities - they help set your child up for a lifetime of healthy habits.

Why Early Dental Visits Matter
1. Build Confidence from a Young Age

Kiddie dental visits are designed to be calm, fun, and positive. Seeing a dentist early helps your child feel comfortable at the dentist and prevents dental anxiety later in life (and we all know how that trauma can stick with you!).

2. Catch Small Problems Early

A kids' dental check-up can catch early signs of tooth decay, developmental issues, or habits like thumb sucking. The sooner we spot something, the easier, cheaper and less scary it is to manage.

3. Prevent Tooth Decay in Children

Tooth decay is the most common chronic condition in children, but it's 100% preventable. Regular cleanings, fluoride treatments, and oral hygiene tips and dental sealants can help protect those tiny teeth.

4. Learn Healthy Habits

Our dental team loves teaching kids (and parents!) how to brush properly, choose tooth-friendly snacks, and build strong oral hygiene routines at home - setting up those little smiles for lifelong good oral health attitudes.

5. Monitor Growth and Development

As your child grows, their teeth and jaws change too. Dentists monitor spacing, alignment, and bite - and help advise you on simple things like what dummy is the best for development. If needed they can refer your child for orthodontic care for early interceptive treatment if needed.

Make It Part of Your Routine

Just like school check-ups or vaccines, regular dental visits for kids are an essential part of staying healthy. We recommend a check-up and cleaning every 6 months.
